Started in 1971 by Lloyd Williams and Vertis Sails to give inner-city Memphis players a competitive stage. Began at Melrose with nine teams. Hamilton High became the permanent host in 1992; girls divisions started 1993, middle schools 2009. 50+ years running.
Among the oldest holiday-window high school tournaments in the South, with deep Memphis-program roots. College scouts come because the Memphis basketball pipeline runs through this gym.
Best for: Memphis-area and regional programs wanting early-season competition with scout presence in a meaningful community event.
Tradeoffs: Pre-Thanksgiving slot bumps up against fall-sport overlap. Public schedule lives on a Weebly site — not always updated promptly. Mostly Memphis-area programs; not a national draw.
